Most rust repair advice sends people to three or four products and a weekend of sanding. For a small removable part, that is fine. For a trailer chassis, a barn roof, a set of railings or the underside of a car, it is unrealistic — which is why so many of those jobs get painted over and fail within a season.

A converter solves the realistic version of the problem: rusted metal you cannot dismantle, that needs stabilising and painting where it stands. Doing that one thing well, in five bundle sizes, is the whole business.

We also publish coverage figures, cure times and clear limits rather than marketing superlatives. If your panel is perforated, no bottle fixes it, and we would rather say so on the page than in a refund email.

Most rust problems people actually face are the same problem: sound but corroded steel that needs stabilising and painting. A converter that does that job well covers vehicle undersides, trailers, gates, roofs, farm equipment and workshop tools. Adding six adjacent products would give us more to sell and give you more to get wrong.

So we make the choice simple. One formulation, one decision to make — how many bottles — and honest coverage figures so that decision is easy. The coverage number we publish, roughly 55 sq ft per bottle, is a two-coat figure on weathered steel rather than a best-case single-coat figure, because a best-case number that leaves you short on a Saturday afternoon is worse than no number at all.

Selling direct is part of the same logic. A product that passes through a distributor and a retailer carries two extra margins and usually ends up on a shelf next to eleven near-identical bottles with no one to explain the difference. We would rather answer the question ourselves.

Vehicle owners keeping something alive rather than restoring it to concours standard: arches, sills, chassis rails, trailer frames, subframes. The realistic goal is stabilised steel under a maintained topcoat, and that is a weekend and two or three bottles.

Property owners with steel that is expensive to replace and awkward to remove: gates, railings, balconies, metal roofing, staircases, shed frames. Here the value is in avoiding scaffolding, replacement and disruption for the sake of a treatment round.

Farms, trades and workshops treating quantity: implements, gates, cattle handling equipment, roofing runs, machine frames, vices, mower decks. These buyers order 8-packs, want the coverage maths to be right and care more about downtime than about a bottle price.

You will not find a five-star average or a fabricated laboratory number on this site. Reviews are illustrative of the kinds of jobs customers do and are labelled as such, and where we quote a figure — coverage, cure time, temperature range — it is a working figure you can hold us to.

We also publish the failure modes. Every guide here has a section on where the product is the wrong choice, and the most common causes of a job going wrong: loose rust left in place, grease not removed, and topcoat applied before the film had cured. Knowing those three things is worth more than any marketing claim.
