Why the primed film matters
The converted layer is not just inert, it is keyed. As the coating dries, the polymer binds the converted oxide into a matte film with exactly the surface profile paint wants. That is why a separate etch or metal primer is redundant for most systems.
It also means fewer failure points. Every extra coating interface in a system is another place adhesion can let go. One product doing two jobs is one interface less to worry about.
Check your topcoat's data sheet if it specifies its own primer. Where it does, follow the sheet. For alkyd enamels, acrylic metal paints, chassis coatings and most rattle-can finishes, the cured converter is your primer.

What 'primer built in' actually means
A conventional rust job is three products: something to kill or remove the rust, a primer to give the paint a key, and the topcoat. Each stage has its own drying window and its own opportunity to trap moisture or contamination between layers. Most home repairs that fail do so at one of those interfaces rather than in the paint itself.
RustGuard™ collapses the first two stages into one film. The phosphoric-acid component converts iron oxide into a stable complex; the latex binder in the same liquid cures around it into a continuous coating. What you are left with is not bare converted rust waiting for a primer — it is a primed surface, keyed and matte, ready for colour.

Which topcoats go over it, and which need a test patch
Oil-based enamels, acrylic and latex paints, hammered finishes, chassis paints and standard aerosol topcoats all go over a fully cured film without drama. That covers the overwhelming majority of home, vehicle and property jobs, and it is why we specify 24 hours rather than the shorter recoat window some products claim.
Two-pack automotive systems and some high-build industrial epoxies are the ones to test first. They are not incompatible as a rule, but their solvents are aggressive and the only way to be certain on your specific product is a patch on a treated offcut left for a day before you commit to a whole panel.
Do not topcoat early. The commonest cause of blistering weeks later is paint applied over a film that had converted but not fully cured, trapping the last of the moisture underneath. If the surface is even slightly tacky, give it longer — humidity extends cure time considerably.
Getting a primer-grade finish

Remove loose material properly
Scrape and wire-brush until nothing lifts under a fingernail. Adhesion is decided here, not in the bottle.

Degrease and confirm with a splash test
Water should sheet, not bead. Any oil left behind shows up later as an orange patch that never converted.

Thin and even. Puddles cure slowly, skin over and stay soft underneath.

Do I still need a separate primer?
For most standard topcoats, no — the cured film primes the surface. If your paint's data sheet names a required primer, follow it.
Can I use it as a primer on bare metal?
It is designed for rusted steel. On fully bare metal, a dedicated etch primer is the better choice.
Does it work under 2K paint systems?
Generally yes, once fully cured. Check the system's data sheet for compatibility on anything high-value.
How long before the topcoat?
24 hours minimum, and ideally within a week while the surface is clean.
Is rust converter the same as primer?
RustGuard™ is both: the acid converts the rust and the latex in the same coat cures into a primer film. You paint straight over it, with no separate primer step.
Do I still need primer before painting?
No. After 24 hours of cure the film is your primer. Just make sure it is genuinely dry, not tacky.
What colour is the cured film?
Matte black. It can be left as a finish in low-exposure indoor situations, though a topcoat is what gives it UV and weather life.
Can I sand it?
Lightly, after full cure, if you want a smoother key for a gloss topcoat. Do not sand back to bare metal — that removes the conversion.
Which paints can I use over it?
Oil-based enamel, acrylic, latex, hammered finishes, chassis paint and most aerosols. Patch-test any 2K automotive or high-build epoxy system first.
How long before I can topcoat?
24 hours at 68°F. Allow longer in cold or humid conditions — the surface should be completely dry to the touch with no tack.
Will it stop rust coming back?
It stabilises the rust that is there and seals it. Long-term protection comes from the topcoat over it and from fixing whatever was letting water sit on the metal.
