The short answer
RustGuard™ is water-based and low odour, but it contains an acid and should be treated with normal chemical respect: nitrile gloves, eye protection, ventilation, and no skin or eye contact. Cured film on metal is inert and needs no special handling. Liquid product and washings must not go down a storm drain — dry them out or take them to a household chemical waste point.

Spills, splashes and cleanup

Disposal
Do not pour unused product down a drain, into a watercourse or onto soil. Take liquid residue to a household hazardous waste or civic amenity site — most accept paints and coatings free of charge.
Small quantities can often be dried out on absorbent material and disposed of as solid waste, but check your local authority's guidance first, since rules vary by region.
Rags and absorbent material carrying wet product should be left to dry in a ventilated place, away from ignition sources, before being disposed of.

Spills, splashes and first aid

Wash with plenty of soap and water. If irritation persists after washing, seek medical advice.

Rinse with running water for at least 15 minutes, holding the eyelid open, and get medical attention. Do not skip the full rinse time.

Swallowed
Do not induce vomiting. Rinse the mouth, drink water and get medical attention immediately, taking the bottle with you.

Spill on a hard floor
Contain with absorbent granules, rags or cat litter, scoop into a sealed bag, then wash the area with plenty of water.

Dig out the contaminated material and bag it. Do not hose it toward a drain or a watercourse.

Wipe immediately with a damp cloth. Once cured, it will need mechanical removal.
Disposal, properly
Liquid product is the only part that needs care. Never pour it down a household drain, a gully or a storm drain — storm drains typically discharge to a watercourse without treatment, and an acidic product with dissolved iron compounds is not something to put into a stream.
For small amounts, the simplest legitimate route is to let it dry out. Brush the residue onto scrap steel or cardboard, leave it somewhere ventilated and away from children and animals until it is completely solid, then put the cured solid in normal household waste. Cured film is inert.
For larger amounts, unwanted bottles or anything you are unsure about, take it to a household hazardous waste point or a local recycling centre chemical bay. They handle paint and workshop chemicals routinely and will accept it. Empty, rinsed bottles can normally go in plastic recycling, but check your local scheme.
Cleaning up brushes, rollers and equipment
- Wipe as much product as possible onto scrap card before washing anything
- Wash brushes in a bucket, not under a running tap into a drain
- Let the bucket water stand until the solids settle, then dry out the residue and bin it
- Do not tip washings onto a driveway that drains to the road
- Dispose of rags flat and dry rather than balled up in a bin
- Wash your hands and forearms before eating, drinking or smoking
Where the cured film sits, safety-wise
Once the film has cured it is a stable, inert coating. Handling treated metal needs no precautions, and the treated surface can be painted, drilled, cut and welded with the usual precautions for those operations — welding through any coating produces fumes and needs extraction, as it does over ordinary primer.
It is not, however, a food-contact coating, and it is not certified for potable water contact. Keep it off grill grates, cookware and anything that touches food or drinking water, regardless of how well cured it is.
Sanding a cured film produces dust, as sanding any coating does. Wear a dust mask and eye protection, and do it outdoors or with extraction where practical.
Do not use it in these situations
- Any surface that contacts food or drinking water
- Confined spaces without forced ventilation
- Spraying indoors without a suitable respirator and extraction
- Where children or animals will be in the work area during application
- Anywhere runoff can reach a storm drain, pond or watercourse
- Surfaces that will operate above roughly 400°F
