Why we sell bulk as bottles rather than one big can
A converter is a reactive product. Once a container is opened, air and contamination start working on it, and any brush that has touched rusty steel and then gone back into the can seeds the whole volume. That is why the last third of a gallon of converter so often ends up thickened and useless while the first two thirds worked perfectly.
Splitting the same volume into sealed bottles removes that failure mode entirely. You open what the session needs, decant into a tray or a small pot, and the rest of the pack is untouched and still has its full shelf life. On a multi-weekend project — a roof, a yard of farm equipment, a chassis — that difference is worth more than the packaging costs.
It is also easier to work with. A one-litre bottle can be carried up a ladder, held while brushing overhead, and put down on a purlin without becoming a hazard. A gallon can wants a bench and a decant every time you move.

Jobs that genuinely need bulk quantities
A 30 by 40 ft agricultural roof is 1,200 sq ft of sheet before you count the ribs, which is roughly three 8-packs treated in two coats — and that is a job worth doing in sections across a few dry weekends rather than all at once. A yard of implements — a plough, a trailer, two gates and a feeder — lands close to 400 sq ft and fits one 8-pack with a little to spare.
Structural steel is measured the same way but rusts unevenly, so plan by the surface you will actually treat rather than the total steel present. A mezzanine frame with 200 sq ft of visibly corroded flange and web needs the 5-pack, not the 8, unless you intend to coat sound painted steel as well.
On any large job, order slightly over. Running out with two purlins to go means either a fortnight of half-treated steel sitting in the weather or a rush purchase of a different product, and mixing systems mid-roof is how you get a patchwork finish.
Running a bulk job efficiently

Measure and split the job into sections
Work out square feet per section so each session has a defined start and finish, and no section is left half-coated overnight.

Decant, never brush from the bottle
Pour into a small pot or tray. A brush that has touched rusty steel should never go back into a sealed bottle.

Prep the whole section before opening anything
Scrape, wire-brush and degrease the full section first. Prep and application in alternating bursts wastes hours.

Two thin coats, three to four hours apart
On weathered or pitted bulk steel the second coat is where durability comes from.

Reseal and store the rest cool and dry
Unopened bottles keep about two years. Store above freezing and out of direct sun.

Topcoat within a week
The cured film is a primer and will hold, but paint it while the surface is clean rather than after a month of dust.
