What changes the timings
- Cold below 10 °C / 50 °F: the reaction stalls; do not apply
- High humidity: drying slows significantly, sometimes doubling cure time
- Direct sun on hot metal: the film skins before it reacts — work in the shade
- Thick application: the surface dries while the underside stays wet
- Poor airflow: enclosed cavities and footwells take much longer
- Rain on an uncured film: treat that area as needing re-application
How to check it is genuinely cured

Look at the colour
Uniform dark grey or black. Any remaining orange means untreated rust — re-apply there.

Press with a gloved thumb
No softness, no transfer, no tackiness anywhere including the seams.

Check the slowest spots
Seams, fold lines and shaded areas cure last. Judge the job by those, not by the open panel.

Then topcoat
Once all three checks pass and 24 hours have elapsed.
Frequently asked questions
Can I topcoat after 12 hours?
Not advisable. The film may feel dry while still holding moisture, and that shows up later as blistering.
What if I leave it longer than a week?
Wipe it down, check for fresh orange at the edges, and touch up before topcoating.
Can I speed it up with a heater?
Gentle warmth and airflow help. Direct heat that dries the surface faster than it reacts does not.
Does it cure in a cold garage in winter?
Slowly, and below 10 °C / 50 °F it may not properly react at all. Warm the space first.
