Rusted metal in, paint-ready surface out
Brush RustGuard™ over sound rust, let it cure, then paint. Images are illustrative — results depend on surface condition and preparation.
Why converter-primer beats paint-over-rust
A direct-to-rust topcoat seals moisture in with the corrosion. It looks correct for a season, then the film blisters as the oxide underneath keeps expanding. Converting first breaks that cycle: the oxide is turned into a stable organometallic complex and locked under a polymer film before any colour goes on.
Because the converted layer is already a primer, you skip a step. Prep, convert, wait a day, topcoat.
What you can paint over RustGuard™
Once fully cured at 24 hours, the converted film accepts most conventional coatings.
| Topcoat | Compatible | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Acrylic / latex enamel | Yes | Easiest pairing, low odour |
| Oil-based / alkyd enamel | Yes | Excellent for gates and railings |
| Chassis and underbody paint | Yes | Common choice on vehicle work |
| 2K epoxy or polyurethane | Yes, with a test patch | Always spot-test adhesion first |
| Cellulose / lacquer thinners | Not recommended | Aggressive solvents can lift the film |
| Powder coating | No | Needs bare, blasted metal |

Frequently asked questions
Is RustGuard™ a finished paint?
No. It converts and primes. Leave it unpainted indoors or in dry shelter if you like, but anything in sun or rain wants a topcoat.
Can I paint over it the same day?
Wait the full 24 hours. Painting too early traps moisture from the water-based film and can cause the topcoat to blister.
What colour does it dry?
A matte blue-black. Uneven colour usually means uneven rust, not a failed application.
Do I need a separate primer as well?
No. That is the point of a converter-primer. Adding an extra primer coat is not harmful, just unnecessary.
