Rust converter paint: convert and prime in the same coat — Canada

"Rust converter paint" usually means one of two things: a converter that doubles as a primer, or a topcoat sold as rust-tolerant. RustGuard™ is the first kind, and that distinction matters — it is engineered to react with the rust and give your finish coat something stable to grip, not to be the finish itself.

  • Brush-on formula
  • No heavy sanding
  • Paint-ready finish

The short answer

Rust converter paint is a converter and a primer in one coat: it reacts with the existing rust and leaves a dark film you then topcoat in whatever colour you want. It is not a finish paint. Leave it bare and UV plus rain will chalk it back within a season or two — the durability comes from the topcoat you put over it.

  • One coat converts and primes; a second thin coat on pitted areas is worth the extra hours
  • Topcoat within about seven days, after a full 24-hour cure
  • Colour is the topcoat's job — the converted film is always dark blue-black
  • It will not hide texture; deep pitting stays visible under paint unless you fill it

Why converter-primer beats paint-over-rust

A direct-to-rust topcoat seals moisture in with the corrosion. It looks correct for a season, then the film blisters as the oxide underneath keeps expanding. Converting first breaks that cycle: the oxide is turned into a stable organometallic complex and locked under a polymer film before any colour goes on.

Because the converted layer is already a primer, you skip a step. Prep, convert, wait a day, topcoat.

What you can paint over RustGuard™

Once fully cured at 24 hours, the converted film accepts most conventional coatings.

What buyers say

Rated by people who hate sanding

4.8Illustrative average across 1,200+ orders
  • Saved my truck bed

Wire-brushed the loose scale, brushed a coat on and left it overnight. Next morning it was a flat black surface that took primer without fighting me.

  • No more grinding for hours

I restore gates and railings. This cut my prep time in half on pitted sections where the grinder just polishes the rust around.

    Marcus H. · Leeds, UK

  • Held up through the wet season

Treated the shed roof sheets and topcoated them. Two seasons of rain later the treated panels still look the way I left them.

  • Trailer frame looks new

Frame rails were surface-rusted everywhere. Two bottles covered the whole thing with enough left over for the tongue and jack.

    Tom V. · Hamilton, ON

  • Simple to use

Shake, brush, wait. No mixing, no strong acid smell like the jelly products I used before.

  • Bought the 5-pack, no regrets

Fence posts, patio furniture and a mower deck off one bundle. Ordering the workshop pack was cheaper than buying singles twice.

Where the primer function comes from

Two things happen when a converter dries. The acid reacts with iron oxide and locks it into a stable organo-metallic compound, and the polymer in the carrier coalesces into a continuous film over the top. That film is what makes the product a primer: it is keyed, sealed and chemically bound to what used to be loose rust, which is exactly the job a conventional primer does on clean steel.

This is why you do not put a separate etch primer over cured converter. You would be priming a primer, adding thickness and a second failure interface for no benefit. Sand nothing, wipe the dust off, and put your topcoat straight on.

The one exception is filler. If pitting is deep enough that you want a smooth cosmetic finish, convert first, cure, then skim with a body filler or high-build primer over the treated film, and paint that. The converter is doing the corrosion work and the filler is doing the shape work.

Topcoat compatibility over cured RustGuard™

Cured means a full 24 hours dry and dust-free. Anything marked test-first is usually fine but worth proving on an offcut.

Colour, sheen and what the finish really looks like

The converted film dries matte and very dark — somewhere between blue-black and charcoal, sometimes with a slight purple cast on heavily rusted steel. People are often surprised at how good it looks bare on a farm gate or a workshop frame, and it is tempting to stop there. Do not: bare converted film is a primer, not a weather coat.

For colour, treat the film like any dark primer. Light topcoats, especially yellows, reds and whites, need two or three coats to cover properly. If you are painting something a pale colour, a mid-grey primer coat over the converted film first will save you a whole tin of topcoat.

Sheen is worth thinking about too. Gloss telegraphs every remaining pit and ripple, which is why gloss on a repaired sill looks worse than satin on the same repair. On rescued metal — gates, brackets, farm equipment, garage frames — satin or a hammered finish reads as intentional rather than as a patch.

Converter to finished paint, in order

  1. 01

    Prep and degrease

Remove loose material, wash off oil and wax, rinse and dry fully. Nothing else in this list can rescue bad prep.

  2. 02

First converter coat, thin and even

Brush it into pitting and seams. It should look wet and uniform, never puddled.

  3. 03

    Watch for the darkening

Orange goes blue-black in 20 minutes to two hours. Patches that stay orange mean grease, or no rust there to convert.

  4. 04

Second coat on pitting after 3–4 hours

Deep pits and salted steel want a second thin coat once the first is touch dry and dark.

  5. 05

    Cure 24 hours

Keep it dry. Rain on an uncured film means washing out and re-treating that area.

  6. 06

Fill and shape, if you want smooth

Optional. Body filler or high-build primer over the cured film for cosmetic panels.

  7. 07

    Topcoat within about seven days

Two coats, thin, in the compatible system you tested. Keep the whole panel in one continuous film.

Signs the paint stage is going wrong

Catch these on the day rather than next spring.

  • Topcoat crawls or beads — there is still contamination, or the film was not fully cured
  • Blisters within days — moisture trapped by topcoating too early
  • Orange bleeding through the topcoat — rust that was never converted, usually a missed seam
  • Film wipes off on a rag — the converter went onto wax or oil and never bonded
  • Wrinkling under a solvent topcoat — 2K applied too heavy on a young film
  • Patchy gloss — dust settled on the cured film before painting; wipe down first

What rust converter paint will not do

  • It is not a finish coat — bare converted film chalks in sun and rain within a season or two
  • It will not fill pitting or hide texture; that is filler's job, not chemistry's
  • It will not bond over grease, wax, silicone or flaking scale
  • It will not work on aluminium, stainless, copper, brass or unrusted galvanising
  • It will not close a hole, and painting over one hides a structural problem
  • It will not stay put on a surface that runs hotter than about 400°F in service

Frequently asked questions

Is RustGuard™ a finished paint?

No. It converts and primes. Leave it unpainted indoors or in dry shelter if you like, but anything in sun or rain wants a topcoat.

Can I paint over it the same day?

Wait the full 24 hours. Painting too early traps moisture from the water-based film and can cause the topcoat to blister.

What colour does it dry?

A matte blue-black. Uneven colour usually means uneven rust, not a failed application.

Do I need a separate primer as well?

No. That is the point of a converter-primer. Adding an extra primer coat is not harmful, just unnecessary.

Do I need a primer over rust converter paint?

No. The cured film is your primer. Adding another primer just adds thickness and one more layer that can fail.

Can I leave the converted film unpainted?

Short term, yes — indoors or in a dry shed it holds up for a long time. Outdoors it needs a topcoat, because UV and rain will break the film down.

How many coats of topcoat do I need?

Two thin coats for dark colours, three for pale ones. The film is very dark, so pale topcoats need help or a grey mid-coat.

Can I spray colour straight over it the same day?

No. Wait the full 24 hours. Same-day topcoating is the most common cause of blistering weeks later.

Will it match the paint already on the panel?

The converter will not, but your topcoat can. Feather the old paint edge back, convert the bare rusted area, then paint the whole panel rather than spot-painting.

Does it work under powder coating?

No. Powder coating needs clean blasted metal and an oven cycle the film is not designed for.
