Rusted metal in, paint-ready surface out
Brush RustGuard™ over sound rust, let it cure, then paint. Images are illustrative — results depend on surface condition and preparation.
The short answer
RustGuard™ costs $24 for one bottle and drops to $9 a bottle in the 8-pack. One bottle treats around 55 sq ft in two thin coats, so the real number that matters is roughly 44 cents per treated square foot at single-bottle pricing and about 16 cents at 8-pack pricing. Every quote you compare should be converted to cost per treated square foot before you decide anything.
- 1 bottle $24 · 2 for $34 · 3 for $42 · 5 for $55 · 8 for $72
- Free tracked shipping from three bottles up, which is why most jobs start there
- ≈55 sq ft per bottle in two coats — the coverage figure the price should be judged against
- No primer to buy separately: the cured film is the primer, which removes a product and a day
Cost per square foot
Based on approximately 55 sq ft of coverage per bottle on light-to-moderate rust.
| Bundle | Price | Coverage | Cost / sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 bottle | $24 | 55 sq ft | $0.44 |
| 2 bottles | $34 | 110 sq ft | $0.31 |
| 3 bottles | $42 | 165 sq ft | $0.25 |
| 5 bottles | $55 | 275 sq ft | $0.20 |
| 8 bottles | $72 | 440 sq ft | $0.16 |

Where the price can move
Heavily pitted or scaled metal soaks up more product — plan for a second coat and roughly 30% more than the flat-surface figure. Rough cast iron behaves the same way.
Conversely, light surface bloom on smooth steel can stretch past the stated coverage, because you only need a thin film for the reaction to complete.

What buyers say
Rated by people who hate sanding
Saved my truck bed
Wire-brushed the loose scale, brushed a coat on and left it overnight. Next morning it was a flat black surface that took primer without fighting me.

Dale R. · Tucson, AZ
No more grinding for hours
I restore gates and railings. This cut my prep time in half on pitted sections where the grinder just polishes the rust around.
Marcus H. · Leeds, UK
Held up through the wet season
Treated the shed roof sheets and topcoated them. Two seasons of rain later the treated panels still look the way I left them.

Janine K. · Brisbane, AU
Trailer frame looks new
Frame rails were surface-rusted everywhere. Two bottles covered the whole thing with enough left over for the tongue and jack.
Tom V. · Hamilton, ON
Simple to use
Shake, brush, wait. No mixing, no strong acid smell like the jelly products I used before.
Ricardo M. · Houston, TX
Bought the 5-pack, no regrets
Fence posts, patio furniture and a mower deck off one bundle. Ordering the workshop pack was cheaper than buying singles twice.
Ellen S. · Portland, OR

Why bottle price is the wrong number to shop on
Rust converters are sold in wildly different container sizes, at wildly different solids contents, with coverage claims that are almost always quoted for a single thin coat on smooth steel. That combination makes shelf price close to meaningless. A cheap quart that only covers 30 sq ft properly and needs a separate primer afterwards costs more per finished job than a dearer bottle that primes as it converts.
The number that survives comparison is cost per treated square foot, calculated on two coats, because two coats is what pitted or salted steel actually needs. Take the price, divide by the honest two-coat coverage, and then add anything else the job forces you to buy — primer, thinners, extra abrasive discs, a second trip out for more product.
Do that arithmetic on a typical trailer frame or set of railings and the ranking usually inverts. The product that looked expensive on the shelf finishes the job in one purchase, and the bargain quart turns into two quarts plus a can of primer plus an extra Saturday.
RustGuard™ pricing and what each pack actually covers
Coverage assumes two thin coats at roughly 55 sq ft per bottle. Single-coat coverage on smooth steel is higher, but two coats is the honest planning figure.
| Pack | Price | Per bottle | Two-coat coverage | Cost per treated sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 bottle | $24 | $24.00 | ≈55 sq ft | ≈44¢ |
| 2 bottles | $34 | $17.00 | ≈110 sq ft | ≈31¢ |
| 3 bottles | $42 | $14.00 | ≈165 sq ft | ≈25¢ |
| 5 bottles | $55 | $11.00 | ≈275 sq ft | ≈20¢ |
| 8 bottles | $72 | $9.00 | ≈440 sq ft | ≈16¢ |
What a real job costs, start to finish
A set of garden railings roughly 40 ft long and 3 ft high is about 120 sq ft of surface once you allow for both faces of flat bar. That is three bottles at $42 with free shipping, plus a wire brush and a topcoat you probably already own. Two afternoons of work and the ironwork is stabilised and painted for well under $60 all in.
A single-axle trailer frame with a deck is closer to 90 sq ft of treatable steel, so two bottles at $34 covers it with a little in reserve for the spring hangers and the coupling. A light-truck chassis is 150 to 250 sq ft depending on cab and bed length, which puts it in the 5-pack at $55 — around 20 cents a square foot to stop the corrosion that would otherwise write the vehicle off.
Compare that to the alternative. Media blasting a truck chassis is a few hundred dollars before anyone paints anything. A workshop rust repair on two rear arches is usually more than the entire 8-pack. The chemistry is the cheap part of rust control; the expensive part is leaving it another two winters.
Cost comparison against the traditional route
Typical DIY costs for a 120 sq ft job — a set of railings, a small trailer or a section of roof sheet.
| Approach | Materials | Extra time | What you end up with |
|---|---|---|---|
| RustGuard™ converter | $42 (3-pack, ships free) | 2 short sessions | Stabilised, primed, paint-ready film |
| Sand back to bare + primer + paint | $55–$90 abrasives and primer | A full weekend | Bare steel that flash-rusts if you stop |
| Naval jelly, then rinse, prime, paint | $35–$60 plus primer | Extra rinse and dry cycle | Clean metal, plus water you must dispose of |
| Blasting, quoted out | $250–$600 | Booking and transport | Excellent substrate, at a price |
| Paint straight over rust | $25 paint | One afternoon | Bubbles again within a season |
Where the price can move, honestly
Deep pitting drinks product. Pitted steel has far more true surface area than its measured dimensions suggest, and the liquid wicks into every void, which is exactly what makes it work. Budget 20 to 30 per cent above your measured area on anything heavily pitted or salted.
Rough surfaces do the same. Cast iron, weathered angle iron, corrugated sheet and old weld seams all take more than smooth panel steel. Spraying rather than brushing costs more again — overspray and atomisation loss typically add 20 to 40 per cent to consumption on open frameworks.
Prices on this site are in USD and include no hidden handling charge. Shipping is free from three bottles up; single and double packs carry a small flat rate shown before you pay. There is no subscription, no upsell after purchase, and 30 days to send back anything unopened.

How to compare any two rust converter prices fairly
Run every quote through the same five questions and the cheap option usually changes identity.
- Convert the price to cost per treated square foot at two coats, never per bottle or per litre
- Check whether the coverage claim is for one coat on smooth steel — most are
- Add the cost of a separate primer if the product does not prime as it cures
- Add shipping, because a $19 bottle plus $12 delivery is not a $19 bottle
- Add the cost of running out mid-job: a second order, a second delivery wait, a second prep session
- Check the return terms before you buy a quantity you are guessing at
When RustGuard™ is not the cheapest way to solve your problem
Buying the wrong tool is never good value, however good the price per square foot looks.
- A single small chip on otherwise sound paint — a touch-up pen is cheaper and faster
- Perforated metal, where the real cost is welding and no coating changes that
- Aluminium, stainless or copper corrosion, which this chemistry does not treat
- Show-finish bodywork that needs bare metal and filler for a flat panel
- Very large industrial contracts where a sprayed two-pack system is specified
- Anything running above roughly 400°F, such as exhaust manifolds and stove interiors

Frequently asked questions
Why is the 8-pack so much cheaper per bottle?
Shipping and handling are the fixed costs. Sending eight bottles in one carton costs far less than eight separate orders, and we pass that through.
Are there hidden fees?
No. The total shown before you pay is the total charged. Any local import duty is set by your country, not by us.
Do prices include shipping?
Tracked shipping is free on the 3-pack and above. Smaller orders show the shipping cost before payment.
Is there a trade or bulk price?
The 8-pack at $9 a bottle is the standard trade tier. For repeat volume beyond that, email support@getrustguard.com and we will quote.
How much does rust converter cost per square foot?
Between roughly 16 and 44 cents per treated square foot with RustGuard™, depending on pack size: 44¢ buying a single bottle, 25¢ in the 3-pack and about 16¢ in the 8-pack, all calculated on two thin coats.
Is the bigger bundle actually cheaper or just bigger?
Genuinely cheaper per bottle: $24 each buying one, $14 each in the 3-pack, $9 each in the 8-pack. Unopened bottles keep for two years sealed, so surplus is not waste.
Do I pay for shipping?
Free tracked shipping on three bottles and above. One and two-bottle orders carry a small flat rate shown before payment.
Are there taxes or duties on top?
US orders show any applicable tax at checkout. International orders are billed in USD and may attract local import charges set by your country, which we cannot collect or control.
Do I need to buy primer as well?
No. The cured film is a primer, so you go straight to your topcoat. That is usually $15 to $25 and an extra drying day saved per job.
What if I order too much?
Send back unopened bottles within 30 days of delivery for a refund. Most people keep the spare — a sealed bottle lasts about two years.
